Common John Deere issues we diagnose & fix
If any of these symptoms sound familiar, you're not alone — they're the service patterns we diagnose most often on PowerTech 4045, 6068, 6090 and 6135 marine engines, in both propulsion and genset installations. All of them are normal wear items on hard-working marine diesels.
Overheating at cruise revs
A PowerTech that behaves at idle but creeps hot once loaded up commonly points to a fouled heat exchanger or aftercooler core, or a tired raw-water impeller. We pressure-test and strip the cooling circuit to find the actual restriction rather than guessing.
Raw-water pump leaks or impeller failure
Drips from the pump or a sudden temperature spike often mean the seals or rubber impeller are on the way out — a routine service item on these engines. We replace the pump or impeller and chase any lost vanes out of the system before they block a cooler downstream.
Hard starting or long cranking
On 4045s and 6068s this is often air working into the fuel system, a weak lift pump or worn injectors rather than the starter itself. We test fuel delivery and injector condition to pin down the cause before parts get thrown at it.
Black smoke and down on power
An engine that smokes under load and won't reach rated RPM is usually either working too hard — fouled hull or oversized prop — or starved of air through a dirty aftercooler or intake restriction. A proper sea trial with boost and temperature readings tells us which, and we fix what we find.
Exhaust elbow corrosion and leaks
On wet-exhaust installations the mixing elbow is a known consumable — rust streaks, an exhaust smell in the engine room or salt trails are the early warnings. We inspect and replace elbows before a leak lets water find its way back into the engine.
Recognise one of these? Call (03) 9399 5888 or book a diagnostic — we'll find the cause before it becomes a haul-out.
Our John Deere marine services
John Deere Servicing & Scheduled Maintenance
Keep your PowerTech engine reliable and efficient with scheduled servicing carried out by experienced marine diesel technicians. We service John Deere 4045, 6068, 6090 and 6135 engines to sensible maintenance intervals, log every job, and flag developing issues before they leave you stranded offshore. Whether it's a single yacht auxiliary or a fleet of commercial workboats, we keep you on the water.
- Oil, oil-filter and fuel-filter changes to manufacturer intervals
- Coolant, raw-water and impeller servicing for keel-cooled and heat-exchanger setups
- Belt, hose, anode and seawater-system inspection and renewal
- Service logging and reminders for survey and fleet compliance
Diagnostics & Fault-Finding
When a John Deere isn't running right, guesswork gets expensive. We troubleshoot symptom-first — overheating, hard starting, smoke, power loss, vibration — methodically testing the cooling, fuel-supply, air and exhaust systems to find the real cause. You get a clear explanation of what is wrong and a fixed quote before any work proceeds.
- Cooling system pressure, flow and temperature testing
- Fuel supply and filtration checks, from tank to lift pump
- Air intake, turbo boost and exhaust restriction checks
- Smoke, power-loss, overheating and vibration investigation
Repairs, Overhauls & Rebuilds
From a single repair through to a full engine rebuild, we have the workshop, tooling and diesel expertise to restore your John Deere to dependable performance. We handle top-end work, full overhauls, cooling and turbo repairs, and complete in-frame or out-of-boat rebuilds. Where a rebuild makes more sense than replacement, we'll tell you honestly and quote both ways.
- Top-end overhauls: head, valves, injectors and turbocharger
- Full engine rebuilds with measured tolerances and quality parts
- Cooling, raw-water, exhaust and turbo repairs
- Fuel-injection and HPCR component repair and replacement
Parts, Repower & Installation Support
We source genuine John Deere and quality aftermarket parts to keep your engine running, and we support repowers and new installations across all makes. If your PowerTech is beyond economical repair, we'll scope a repower, advise on engine and gearbox matching — we're authorised Twin Disc and ZF dealers — and handle the mechanical install. One workshop for parts, fitting and commissioning.
- Genuine John Deere and quality aftermarket parts sourcing
- Service kits, filters, impellers, belts and gaskets
- Repower scoping with engine, gearbox and shaft matching
- Engine removal, installation, alignment and sea-trial commissioning

Why boat owners choose Mariner
John Deere marine service — your questions answered
Do you service John Deere marine engines even though you're not a dealer?
Yes. We are an independent marine workshop, not a John Deere dealer, and we service, diagnose, repair and rebuild John Deere PowerTech marine engines every week. Our technicians are skilled diesel specialists across all makes, including common-rail electronic engines. Call (03) 9399 5888 and we'll talk through what your engine needs.
Can you get parts for John Deere marine engines?
Yes. We source genuine John Deere parts as well as quality aftermarket equivalents, from filters and impellers to gaskets, injectors and cooling components. We'll recommend the best option for your budget and how you use the boat. Tell us your engine model and we'll check availability and pricing.
Do you offer mobile service for John Deere engines on Port Phillip Bay?
Yes. We carry out mobile servicing, repairs and breakdown response at the berth, on the mooring or on the hardstand across Port Phillip Bay and greater Melbourne. Larger overhauls and rebuilds are best done in our Spotswood workshop. Call us and we'll advise the most practical approach for your situation.
Should I rebuild my John Deere or repower with a new engine?
It depends on the engine's condition, hours, parts availability and how long you plan to keep the vessel. We assess your PowerTech honestly and quote both a rebuild and a repower so you can compare real numbers, not guesswork. For many engines a rebuild is the cost-effective choice, but we'll tell you straight if it isn't.
How quickly can you turn around a service or repair?
Routine servicing and minor repairs are usually quick, while overhauls and rebuilds depend on scope and parts lead times. We prioritise commercial operators and breakdowns to minimise downtime, and we'll give you a realistic timeframe up front. Call (03) 9399 5888 for a quote and an honest schedule.
