Common MTU issues we diagnose & fix
If your MTU Series 2000 or Series 4000 is showing any of these symptoms, you're not alone — these are the service patterns we're most often asked to diagnose on high-hour MTU marine engines, and all of them are fixable with proper diagnosis.
Raw-water pump weeping or dripping
Series 2000 sea-water pumps have a tell-tale weep hole, and a salty drip usually means a seal is on its way out — left too long, raw water can migrate past the oil seal. We inspect, reseal or replace pumps before a small leak becomes an engine problem.
Overheating at cruise revs
On these engines it's commonly the raw-water side: a worn impeller, scaled heat-exchanger tube stacks or fouled coolers that cope at idle but can't shed heat under load. We pressure-test and service the whole cooling circuit to find the real restriction.
Down on power or won't reach rated RPM
Fouled charge-air (intercooler) cores, tired injectors or a lazy turbocharger will quietly rob a Series 2000 or 4000 of top-end performance. We measure where the loss is coming from rather than guessing at parts.
Black or white exhaust smoke
Black smoke under load often points to injectors, air restriction or charge-cooling on one bank; white smoke and hard starting frequently trace back to injector wear or water in the fuel — these high-pressure fuel systems are sensitive to fuel quality. We test injectors and the fuel system to pin down the cylinder at fault.
Oil leaks from sump or intercooler mounts
Seepage from the sump gasket or where the intercooler mounts to the flywheel housing is a known service item on well-used Series 2000s. We strip, reseal and verify the fix properly so it doesn't return next season.
