Your set
Standby, prime power or marine?
How a generator is used decides what wears and when its service comes due. Pick the one closest to yours.
A standby set can sit for months between outages, then has to start and take the load first time. Because it runs so few hours, its servicing comes due on time as much as on hours. We service it at your site, on a schedule that fits around your test runs.
- Engine oil and filters
- Fuel filters, water drained from the separator
- Coolant condition and concentration
- Air filter and restriction indicator
- Belts, hoses and leak checks
- Radiator and cooling system check
- Starting batteries load-tested
- Test run to temperature
What you get
You’ll know exactly where your set stands.
Every service ends with a plain-English rundown. Each item is marked done, keep an eye on, or needs attention, so you can see what’s urgent and what can wait. Anything beyond the service is quoted first.
- A separate record for each set
- A service history for your site records
- What’s due next, so you can plan around the site
Under factory warranty?
If your set is still under its factory warranty, check the terms for what they say about servicing, parts and records, and tell us when you book. If the terms send any work to an authorised MTU service partner, we’ll tell you which items before we start. Either way, we record every visit. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply in addition to these terms.

Is it due?
Signs your genset is due for a service.
A standby set usually lets you down when it’s needed most. If one of these sounds familiar, book a service before the next outage.
It’s been a year since the last service
A standby set runs so few hours that time, not hours, is often what makes its service due. Oil, coolant, filters and batteries age even when the set isn’t running.
Test runs are short and lightly loaded
A diesel that only ever runs lightly loaded can build up unburnt fuel and carbon in the exhaust, often called wet stacking. Tell us how the set is exercised and we’ll look for the signs at the service.
The starting batteries are getting old
Tired batteries are one of the most common reasons a standby set fails to start. We load-test them at every service and tell you before they’re due.
Smoke or uneven running on test runs
Smoke you haven’t seen before, or an engine that won’t hold a steady speed, can trace back to fuel or air filters. Mention it when you book, so we can look at it during the service.
Drips or stains under the set
Oil, coolant or fuel weeping from a hose, gasket or seal is easier and cheaper to deal with when it’s found early. We note it in the rundown and quote before any work.
The run hours have crept past the interval
Prime power sets cover hours quickly. If the service interval has passed, book in before the oil and filters are past their best.

Questions
What generator owners ask us
Are you an MTU dealer?
No. We’re an independent engineering workshop, not an MTU dealer, and we’re not part of MTU, MTU Onsite Energy or Rolls-Royce Power Systems. We service MTU generators and gensets as independent specialists, with genuine or quality aftermarket parts.
Which MTU generators do you service?
Diesel gensets built on MTU Series 1600, 2000 and 4000 engines, used for standby or prime power, onshore or on board. We also service MTU marine engines.
Do you service MTU Onsite Energy generators?
Yes. MTU Onsite Energy is the name MTU’s generator sets were sold under. If yours runs on an MTU Series 1600, 2000 or 4000 diesel engine, we can service it.
Do you come to our site?
Yes. We service onshore generators at your site across Melbourne, and in regional Victoria by arrangement. Marine gensets are serviced at the berth around Port Phillip Bay.
How often does a generator need servicing?
It depends on the engine, its rating and how many hours it runs. A standby set that runs few hours still needs servicing on time, while a prime power set comes due on hours. We work to the schedule for your engine and record every visit.
How much does a generator service cost?
It depends on the engine, the set and what’s due on its schedule. We confirm all of that and give you a clear quote before any work starts.
Which MTU do I have?
The engine plate carries the full designation, such as 12V 2000 or 16V 4000 followed by the rating, which tells us the cylinder count and series. Send it with the serial number when you book, along with the generator’s own nameplate details if it has one.
How do I book?
Use the booking form at the top of this page or call (03) 9399 5888. We aim to reply within 1 business day.
Keep the power on.
