The Volvo Penta D13 is a 12.8-litre, inline-six marine diesel built for heavy-duty endurance, using common-rail direct injection and turbocharging with aftercooling to deliver high power and strong low-rpm torque, up to around 1000 hp (735 kW) in its top inboard rating. Offered in both straight-shaft inboard and IPS pod-drive configurations, it powers large planing and semi-displacement motor yachts, sportfishers and superyacht tenders cruising Port Phillip Bay. As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer, Mariner Engineering services, diagnoses and repairs the D13 range with genuine parts and factory tooling.

The Volvo Penta D13 line we service

    D13-800
Inline-6, 12.8 L, rated 588 kW (800 hp). An entry inboard rating in the D13 range, well suited to large displacement and semi-displacement motor yachts. Common-rail injection and turbocharging give strong low-rpm torque.
    D13-900
Inline-6, 12.8 L, rated 662 kW (900 hp). A high-output inboard rating for large planing motor yachts and sportfishers, with an IMO III emissions option available for international operation.
    D13-1000
Inline-6, 12.8 L, rated 735 kW (1000 hp). The flagship inboard rating in the D13 range, for the largest planing motor yachts, sportfishers and superyacht tenders.
    D13-IPS pod-drive packages
The 12.8 L D13 in Volvo Penta IPS form (e.g. the D13-IPS1350 package), pairing the engine with forward-facing twin counter-rotating pods, joystick docking and EVC. IPS package ratings denote the total twin-installation power class and are installed in twin, triple and quad configurations on large luxury motor yachts.

When to service your Volvo Penta D13

We service to the Volvo Penta schedule for your exact model — never a one-size-fits-all hour figure — and log every visit so your warranty and resale history stay intact.

    Annual / first scheduled service

Carried out at the hours or calendar interval set by Volvo Penta — always follow your engine's own service schedule and owner's manual rather than a fixed universal figure. On a high-output diesel like the D13, regular oil and filter changes are the single biggest factor in long-term reliability, and our technicians log every service against the engine record so warranty and resale history stay intact.

    • Engine oil and oil filter change as per the Volvo Penta schedule
    • Primary and secondary fuel filter replacement
    • Air filter inspection / replacement
    • Raw-water impeller inspection and renewal as required
    • Sacrificial anode inspection and replacement
    • VODIA diagnostic scan, fault-code read and EVC system health check

    Higher-hour & coolant services

At the longer intervals defined in the Volvo Penta schedule, additional items come due alongside the routine oil and filter work. Coolant condition, drive belts and the charge-air/cooling circuit all matter on a hard-working 12.8-litre engine, so these are inspected and renewed strictly to the manufacturer's timing — never guessed.

    • Coolant condition check and replacement at the Volvo Penta interval
    • Auxiliary and serpentine drive belt inspection / replacement
    • Heat exchanger, charge-air cooler and raw-water circuit inspection
    • Turbocharger and induction system inspection
    • Crankcase ventilation and breather service where applicable
    • Cooling system pressure test and hose / clamp check

    Major service & valve clearances

Major-service intervals bring the most thorough checks, including valve clearance adjustment where the D13 schedule calls for it. We use VODIA and genuine Volvo Penta parts throughout, and report any wear we find so you can plan ahead. We keep D13 work to servicing, diagnostics and repairs — for full engine-block rebuilds we coordinate with Volvo Penta rather than overclaiming an in-house overhaul.

    • Valve clearance check and adjustment as per the Volvo Penta schedule
    • Injector and common-rail fuel system inspection
    • Engine and gearbox mount inspection
    • Exhaust system, riser and mixing-elbow inspection
    • Full VODIA diagnostic report with logged engine data
    • Sea trial / load test to confirm performance

Every Volvo Penta D13 service is comprehensive

Genuine Volvo Penta parts, VODIA diagnostics and a fully logged service — here's what's covered:

Engine oil and filter change using genuine Volvo Penta oil and filters
Primary and secondary fuel filter replacement and fuel system check
Air filter and induction inspection, with turbocharger health check
Raw-water impeller and sea-water pump inspection / renewal
Coolant condition check, top-up or replacement to the Volvo Penta interval
Drive belt, anode and hose inspection with replacement as required
VODIA diagnostic scan, fault-code reset and EVC / EMS system check
Valve clearance adjustment at major-service intervals where applicable
Battery, charging, alternator and starter-circuit check
Full written service report logged against the engine for warranty and resale

Whether your D13 drives a conventional shaft or a Volvo Penta IPS pod installation, we service the complete package — engine, EVC controls and drive system — with genuine parts. Volvo Penta D13 service — your questions answered

Is Mariner Engineering an authorised Volvo Penta service centre for the D13?

Yes. Mariner Engineering is a genuine factory-authorised Volvo Penta dealer and service centre. Our D13 work is carried out by factory-trained technicians using official VODIA diagnostic software, genuine Volvo Penta parts and full manufacturer warranty support.

Do you service the D13 on board, or does the boat need to come to you?

Both. Our mobile technicians service, diagnose and repair the D13 on board at your marina or mooring anywhere around Port Phillip Bay, and we also welcome vessels into our workshop. Given the size of most D13-powered yachts, on-water mobile service is usually the easiest option — call (03) 9399 5888 to arrange a visit.

How often does a Volvo Penta D13 need servicing?

There is no single universal hour figure — the D13's schedule varies by rating and duty, so always follow your engine's own service schedule and owner's manual. As a guide, expect an annual or first scheduled service covering oil, filters, impeller and anodes, with additional coolant, belt, charge-air and valve-clearance work falling due at the higher-hour and major-service intervals defined by Volvo Penta.

Do you use VODIA and genuine Volvo Penta parts on the D13?

Always. Every D13 service includes a VODIA diagnostic scan to read fault codes and check the EVC / EMS system, and we fit only genuine Volvo Penta oil, filters and parts. This protects your warranty and keeps a clean, logged service history on the engine.

Can you service both inboard and IPS D13 installations?

Yes. We service the full D13 range, including straight-shaft inboard engines (D13-800, D13-900 and D13-1000) and the D13 IPS pod-drive packages. For the IPS pods we also offer drive service, overhaul and rebuild with genuine parts, so engine, controls and driveline are all covered from one authorised workshop.
