The Volvo Penta D2 is a compact in-line 4-cylinder marine diesel built for sailing yachts and small craft, delivering roughly 40 to 75 hp from a freshwater-cooled platform (the D2-40 runs a 1.5-litre block, while the D2-50, D2-60 and D2-75 share a 2.2-litre block). It is offered as an inboard shaft installation or as a fully integrated saildrive package, and powers a huge proportion of the cruising yachts moored around Port Phillip Bay. As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer, Mariner Engineering services, diagnoses and repairs the entire D2 range using genuine Volvo Penta parts and factory VODIA diagnostic software.

The Volvo Penta D2 line we service

    D2-40
In-line 4-cylinder, 1.5L, naturally aspirated, around 39 hp. Volvo Penta's entry sailing-yacht diesel — shaft inboard or fully integrated 130S saildrive package. Ideal auxiliary power for smaller cruising yachts.
    D2-50
In-line 4-cylinder, 2.2L, naturally aspirated, 50 hp. Popular mid-range auxiliary for cruising yachts, available as shaft inboard or 130S saildrive. Smooth, low-rpm running with low noise and vibration.
    D2-60
In-line 4-cylinder, 2.2L, naturally aspirated with charge-air cooling, 60 hp. Strong displacement-hull performer for larger sailing yachts, offered as shaft inboard or 150S saildrive.
    D2-75
In-line 4-cylinder, 2.2L, turbocharged with charge-air cooling, 75 hp. The flagship D2 for heavier or performance cruising yachts — shaft inboard or 150S saildrive.

When to service your Volvo Penta D2

We service to the Volvo Penta schedule for your exact model — never a one-size-fits-all hour figure — and log every visit so your warranty and resale history stay intact.

    Annual / first scheduled service

Most D2 owners book in once a season or at the first scheduled interval, whichever comes first. We carry out the routine maintenance Volvo Penta specifies for hours and time elapsed — always referenced to your engine's own service schedule and owner's manual rather than a one-size-fits-all hour figure.

    • Engine oil and oil filter change
    • Fuel pre-filter and fine fuel filter replacement
    • Raw-water (sea-water) impeller inspection or renewal
    • Sacrificial anode check and replacement
    • Drive belt / alternator belt inspection and tension
    • Coolant level and condition check, full system inspection

    Higher-hour & major service

At the longer Volvo Penta intervals (and on engines that have done serious hours), we step up to the deeper maintenance items — including coolant renewal, valve-clearance checks where the model calls for it, and a thorough inspection of the cooling and fuel systems. Exact timing follows the Volvo Penta schedule for your specific D2 model.

    • Coolant replacement and cooling-system flush as scheduled
    • Valve clearance check and adjustment where applicable
    • Heat exchanger and raw-water system inspection / clean
    • Fuel system inspection and injector / pump checks
    • Alternator, starter and electrical-system check
    • Full VODIA diagnostic scan and fault-code review

    Saildrive service (130S / 150S)

D2 saildrive packages need their own maintenance alongside the engine. We service, overhaul and rebuild Volvo Penta saildrives with genuine parts — including the gear oil, anodes and the critical rubber diaphragm/bellows seal that protects the hull penetration. Bellows and seal replacement intervals follow Volvo Penta's schedule and are best aligned with a haul-out.

    • Saildrive gear oil change and magnetic plug check
    • Saildrive anode inspection and replacement
    • Rubber diaphragm / bellows inspection and renewal per schedule
    • Propeller, cone clutch and shaft seal inspection
    • Antifoul-compatible leg check and corrosion inspection
    • Genuine-parts saildrive overhaul and rebuild when required

Why owners choose Mariner for Volvo Penta D2 service

Mobile service to your boat, anywhere on Port Phillip Bay

Your D2 doesn't have to leave the water. Our factory-trained technicians come to you — at the marina, mooring, hardstand or on board — for scheduled servicing, diagnostics and most repairs across Port Phillip Bay and greater Melbourne. We bring genuine Volvo Penta parts and VODIA diagnostics to the dock, or you're welcome to bring the boat to our Spotswood workshop.

Authorised Volvo Penta dealer, factory-trained on D2

Mariner Engineering is a genuine factory-authorised Volvo Penta dealer and service centre. That means real factory training on the D2 platform, genuine Volvo Penta parts, official VODIA diagnostic software and warranty support — not generic marine servicing. Your engine's history is logged correctly and any warranty work is handled properly.

Saildrive specialists — service, overhaul & rebuild

The D2's saildrive is its weak point if neglected. We service, overhaul and fully rebuild Volvo Penta 130S and 150S saildrives with genuine parts, including the safety-critical bellows seal, gear oil and anodes — ideally scheduled around your haul-out so the leg, prop and seals are all sorted in one visit.

Volvo Penta D2 service — your questions answered

How often should I service my Volvo Penta D2?

Volvo Penta sets the D2's service schedule by both engine hours and elapsed time, and it varies slightly by model, so we always work to your engine's own service schedule and owner's manual rather than a single universal figure. In practice, most cruising-yacht owners book an annual or first-scheduled service, with deeper higher-hour and major services at the longer intervals. We'll confirm exactly what's due for your D2 when you book.

Are you an authorised Volvo Penta dealer for D2 servicing?

Yes. Mariner Engineering is a genuine factory-authorised Volvo Penta dealer and service centre with factory-trained technicians. We service the full D2 range — D2-40, D2-50, D2-60 and D2-75 — using genuine Volvo Penta parts and official VODIA diagnostic software, with warranty support where applicable.

Can you service my D2 on the boat instead of hauling out?

Yes. Mobile service is a core part of what we do. Our technicians come to your boat — at the marina, on the mooring, on the hardstand or on board — for scheduled servicing, diagnostics and most repairs anywhere across Port Phillip Bay and greater Melbourne. For larger jobs you're also welcome to bring the boat to our Spotswood workshop.

Do you service the D2 saildrive and replace the bellows?

We do. We service, overhaul and rebuild Volvo Penta 130S and 150S saildrives with genuine parts, including the gear oil, anodes and the safety-critical rubber diaphragm (bellows) seal. Bellows replacement follows the Volvo Penta schedule and is best timed with a haul-out so the leg, propeller and seals can all be inspected together.

Do you repair D2 engine faults, or only routine servicing?

Both. Alongside scheduled servicing we diagnose and repair D2 faults — cooling and overheating issues, fuel and injection problems, starting and charging faults, raw-water and impeller failures, and saildrive issues. We run a full VODIA diagnostic scan to pinpoint the cause and repair it with genuine Volvo Penta parts. For major internal engine work such as a full block rebuild, we'll diagnose the fault, advise on the best path and handle the genuine parts.
