The Volvo Penta D8 is an in-line 6-cylinder, 7.7-litre common-rail marine diesel with a twin-entry turbo and aftercooler. In leisure inboard form it powers larger sportscruisers, flybridge cruisers and motor yachts in straight-shaft and IPS pod-drive configurations, with the same engine also offered at lower-rpm commercial ratings. As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer and factory-trained service centre in Spotswood, Mariner Engineering services, diagnoses and repairs the D8 range — keeping your engine and its EVC electronics running exactly as Volvo Penta intended.

When to service your Volvo Penta D8
We service to the Volvo Penta schedule for your exact model — never a one-size-fits-all hour figure — and log every visit so your warranty and resale history stay intact.
Annual / first scheduled service
The D8's first scheduled service and routine annual maintenance should follow the interval set out in your engine's Volvo Penta service schedule and owner's manual — whichever comes first by hours or by time. Typical items at this stage include:
- Engine oil and oil filter change as per the Volvo Penta schedule
- Fuel filter / water separator renewal
- Raw-water impeller inspection or replacement
- Anode (zinc/aluminium) inspection and replacement
- Drive belt inspection and tension check
- Cooling system and coolant condition check
Higher-hour / major service
At higher operating hours the D8 calls for a more thorough service, again timed to the Volvo Penta schedule for your specific variant. Depending on the model and hours this can include:
- Coolant change and cooling-system service
- Air filter and crankcase ventilation check
- Valve clearance check / adjustment where specified for the model
- Turbo, charge-air and intake inspection
- Heat exchanger / aftercooler inspection and service
- Full VODIA diagnostic scan and EVC software check
Drive service (IPS pod)
D8 IPS pod drives have their own service requirements alongside the engine, carried out to the Volvo Penta schedule using genuine parts. This typically covers:
- Pod / drive oil change and condition check
- Drive seals, bellows and gaiter inspection
- Forward-facing duo-prop and propeller inspection
- Drive anode renewal
- EVC / steering and trim actuator checks
- Antifoul and underwater-gear inspection at slip

Volvo Penta D8 service — your questions answered
Is the Volvo Penta D8 a V8?
No. Despite the name, the D8 is an in-line 6-cylinder engine of 7.7 litres, with common-rail injection and a twin-entry turbo. The "8" refers to its place in Volvo Penta's current marine diesel range (D1, D2, D3, D4, D6, D8, D11, D13), not the cylinder count. In leisure inboard form it's rated at 550 or 600 hp, in straight-shaft and IPS pod-drive installations.
Do you service both D8 inboard and D8 IPS pod-drive installations?
Yes. We service the D8 range — straight-shaft inboards (D8-550 and D8-600) and D8 IPS pod packages (IPS700 and IPS800) — including the EVC electronics, and we also look after the lower-rpm commercial D8 ratings. We can overhaul and rebuild the IPS pod drive itself using genuine Volvo Penta parts.
What are the D8 service intervals?
Volvo Penta sets service intervals by engine hours and elapsed time, and they vary by variant and duty, so we always work to your engine's own Volvo Penta service schedule and owner's manual rather than a one-size-fits-all figure. In practice that means a first / annual service, periodic higher-hour services, and a more comprehensive major service, with drive service for IPS pods on its own schedule.
Do you come to the boat, or does it need to come to you?
Both. We offer mobile service to your boat across Port Phillip Bay — at your berth, marina or mooring — for routine maintenance, diagnostics and most repairs, and we also service D8 engines in our Spotswood workshop. Larger drive overhauls and rebuilds are generally completed in the workshop.
Will servicing with Mariner Engineering protect my Volvo Penta warranty?
Yes. As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer and factory-trained service centre, we service your D8 to Volvo Penta's specification using genuine parts and VODIA diagnostics, and stamp your service logbook. This keeps your maintenance history in order and supports any in-warranty claims and warranty work on your engine.
