The Volvo Penta Aquamatic sterndrive is a transom-mounted drive that turns the engine's power into thrust, available with twin counter-rotating Duoprop propellers for extra bite and manoeuvrability or as a single-prop drive on lighter packages. It pairs with both diesel Aquamatic packages (D3, D4 and D6 with SX, DPS, DPH or DPI legs) and petrol V6 and V8 engines (SX and DPS drives). As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer and factory-trained service centre, Mariner Engineering services, diagnoses, repairs, overhauls and rebuilds these drives end to end using genuine Volvo Penta parts.

When to service your Volvo Penta Aquamatic Sterndrive
We service to the Volvo Penta schedule for your exact model — never a one-size-fits-all hour figure — and log every visit so your warranty and resale history stay intact.
Annual / first scheduled drive service
Sterndrives live half in the water and take a beating, so they benefit from a yearly check even when engine hours are low. At each annual or first scheduled service we work to your engine and drive's own Volvo Penta service schedule, dropping the leg to inspect everything that keeps water out and power flowing. Timing and exact items vary by model, so we always follow the schedule in your owner's manual.
- Drive (gear) oil change and inspection for water or metal, as per the Volvo Penta schedule
- Bellows inspection for cracks, perishing and water ingress (exhaust, shift and U-joint bellows)
- Anode inspection and renewal to keep galvanic corrosion in check
- Gimbal bearing, U-joints and input shaft seal checked while the leg is off
- Engine oil, fuel and air filters and raw-water pump impeller on the matched engine, as scheduled
- Trim/tilt operation, steering, propellers and Duoprop hubs checked
Higher-hour & periodic drive service
As the drive accumulates hours and seasons, Volvo Penta's schedule calls for replacement of wear items rather than just inspection. Bellows are the classic example — inspected each service but renewed on a periodic interval because a single split lets water into the drive. We replace these to the schedule and report on anything trending toward end of life.
- Bellows renewal (exhaust, shift and U-joint) on the periodic interval per the Volvo Penta schedule
- Raw-water pump impeller and water pump service on the drive's cooling path, as scheduled
- Gimbal bearing renewal when inspection shows roughness or play
- Drive belts, coolant and engine wear items on the matched diesel engine as scheduled
- Trim/tilt ram seals, hoses and fluid checked and serviced
- Anodes renewed and bonding/earthing checked
Major service, overhaul & rebuild
When a drive is high-hour, has taken on water, has been grounded, or simply isn't shifting and tracking as it should, we strip and overhaul it. As an authorised dealer we carry out full Aquamatic drive overhauls and rebuilds with genuine Volvo Penta parts — something we don't claim for in-house diesel engine-block rebuilds, where we focus on servicing, diagnostics, repairs and parts.
- Full drive strip-down, inspection and measurement of gears, bearings and clutch
- Gimbal bearing, U-joints, shift mechanism and seals renewed
- Bellows, water pump and anodes replaced as part of the rebuild
- VODIA diagnostics on EVC/electronic shift and trim systems where fitted
- Reassembly to Volvo Penta tolerances, then test and sea-trial
- Genuine Volvo Penta parts throughout, with warranty support

Why owners choose Mariner for Volvo Penta Aquamatic Sterndrive service
Mobile sterndrive service to your boat — across Port Phillip Bay
Hauling out for every drive service isn't always practical, so we bring the workshop to you. Our factory-trained technicians service Volvo Penta sterndrives at your berth, marina or hardstand right across Port Phillip Bay, or in our Spotswood workshop when a leg needs to come off for overhaul. Either way you get genuine parts, VODIA diagnostics and authorised-dealer warranty support.
Bellows and water ingress — the failure we catch early
The single most important job on any sterndrive is keeping water out, and that comes down to the bellows. A small split in an exhaust, shift or U-joint bellows can flood the drive and wreck the gimbal bearing and gears. We inspect bellows every service and renew them on the Volvo Penta schedule before they fail — far cheaper than the rebuild a neglected one leads to.
Authorised dealer, genuine parts, full overhauls
As a factory-authorised Volvo Penta dealer and factory-trained service centre, we don't just service Aquamatic drives — we overhaul and rebuild them. From DPH and DPI diesel legs to petrol SX and DPS drives, we strip, measure and rebuild to Volvo Penta tolerances using genuine parts, backed by VODIA diagnostics and warranty support.
Volvo Penta Aquamatic Sterndrive service — your questions answered
How often does a Volvo Penta sterndrive need servicing?
As a rule, a sterndrive benefits from a service every year even if engine hours are low, because the drive sits in the water and is exposed to corrosion and bellows wear. Exact intervals and items vary by model, so we always follow your engine and drive's own Volvo Penta service schedule and owner's manual. As a guide, drive oil is changed and bellows and anodes are inspected at each service, with bellows renewed on a periodic interval per the schedule.
When should the bellows be replaced?
Bellows are inspected at every service and renewed periodically per the Volvo Penta schedule, because a single crack lets water into the drive and can ruin the gimbal bearing and gears. We check the exhaust, shift and U-joint bellows each time the leg is off and recommend renewal before they reach the end of their life rather than after a failure. We follow the interval in your drive's own service schedule rather than a fixed figure.
Do you service both diesel and petrol Volvo Penta sterndrives?
Yes. We service the full Aquamatic range — diesel SX, DPS, DPH and DPI drives on D3, D4 and D6 packages, and petrol SX and DPS drives on V6 and V8 engines — as well as older AQ, SP and DP legs. As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer we use genuine parts and VODIA diagnostics across the lot.
Do you overhaul or rebuild sterndrives, or just service them?
Both. We carry out full Aquamatic drive overhauls and rebuilds with genuine Volvo Penta parts — strip-down, gimbal bearing, U-joints, seals, bellows, water pump and anodes, reassembled to factory tolerances and sea-trialled. (For diesel engines themselves we cover servicing, diagnostics, repairs and parts rather than in-house engine-block rebuilds.)
Can you service my sterndrive on the water without hauling out?
For routine drive service, bellows checks, oil changes and diagnostics we come to your boat at the berth or marina anywhere across Port Phillip Bay. When a leg needs to come off for a bellows renewal, gimbal bearing or full overhaul, we'll arrange that in our Spotswood workshop. Either way you get factory-trained technicians, genuine parts and authorised-dealer warranty support.
