Introduced in 2020, the 6LF-CR series sits near the top of Yanmar's common rail range — only the larger 6LT series sits above it. Three ratings of 485, 530 and 550 MHP, all at 3,000 rpm, are built on the same turbocharged, intercooled inline six-cylinder block with Bosch common rail direct injection, pushing Yanmar's common rail line-up well past the 6LY's 440 MHP ceiling and into the 500-horsepower class.
The family's calling card is a compact, lightweight package for its output, well suited to planing and semi-planing hulls where engine-room space and weight matter. Electronic engine management pairs with Yanmar's VC20 vessel control system, bringing multi-station controls, NMEA 2000 engine monitoring and an optional inboard joystick, while common rail injection keeps the 6LF quiet and smooth for a big six, with clean, efficient running at cruise.
The 6LF range
All three 6LF models share the same block, injection system and 3,000 rpm rated speed, so choosing between them is a question of rating and duty rather than hardware. The 6LF550 is the performance pick for lighter recreational planing hulls chasing top-end speed; the 6LF530 gives near-flagship output with a little more margin; and the 6LF485 is the conservative rating for heavier hulls, higher annual hours or harder working use. Twins are the norm in this class, so hull weight, target cruise speed, gearbox ratio and propeller sizing all feed into the decision — we match the rating against your vessel's numbers and prove it on a sea trial.
Drive options
Shaft drive
The 6LF's standard configuration — supplied as a complete Yanmar package with a ZF marine gearbox (ZF 280 family, in 7-degree down-angle or parallel versions) and VC20 vessel controls for conventional straight-shaft installations.
Other gearbox configurations
Yanmar offers other marine gearboxes and installation configurations on request — no sterndrive or saildrive is available at this power level. We advise on gearbox ratio, shaft line and propeller matching for your hull.

Why buy your 6LF from Mariner
High-output common rail
485–550 MHP at 3,000 rpm from one compact, turbocharged and intercooled inline six — a notably light, space-efficient package for its output, with Bosch common rail injection for quiet, clean, efficient running.
Authorised Yanmar dealer
Mariner Engineering supplies, installs and supports the 6LF range from Spotswood, with factory-trained technicians, genuine Yanmar parts and the dealer-level diagnostics its electronic management and VC20 controls require.
Repower & commissioning
We handle complete changeovers — engine beds and mounts, gearbox and shaft matching, cooling and exhaust — finished with sea-trial commissioning on Port Phillip Bay.
Yanmar 6LF — your questions answered
Which 6LF model do I need — 485, 530 or 550?
They're the same engine at different ratings, so it's a duty question rather than a hardware one. Broadly, the 6LF550 suits lighter recreational planing hulls chasing top-end performance, while the 6LF485 leaves more margin for heavier boats or higher engine hours — and note the top 550 rating isn't certified for commercial use in some markets (it isn't EPA commercial certified in the US, for example). We size the rating against your hull weight, target speeds and expected usage before quoting.
Can I repower my boat with a 6LF?
Often, yes — it's a natural step up for boats running older 6LY or 6LP engines, or other diesels in the 300–450 hp class, where the owner wants more power plus common rail refinement and modern electronic controls. We survey the engine beds, shaft line, gearbox, cooling and exhaust first, then quote the changeover as a complete job including installation and sea-trial commissioning on Port Phillip Bay.
Is the 6LF available with a sterndrive or saildrive?
No — the 6LF is a shaft-drive engine, packaged by Yanmar with ZF gearboxes. Yanmar doesn't offer sterndrive or saildrive legs at this power level: sterndrive options top out with the smaller 8LV family, and saildrives further down the range again. If your boat needs one of those, we can point you to the right family.
