The D11 is the big inline-six of the Volvo Penta range we supply: a 10.8-litre marine diesel offered in 625, 670 and 725 hp ratings. Electronically controlled high-pressure direct injection under EMS engine management and a twin-entry turbocharger give the family its defining character — strong torque from low revs, smooth and comparatively quiet running, and the reserve to hold cruise speed in a loaded boat without working hard.
Sitting above the D4 and D6 in the leisure line-up, the D11 is the step up for boats that have outgrown the smaller blocks. It is typically installed in pairs in flybridge motor yachts, sports cruisers and game boats in roughly the 40-to-60-foot bracket, and the same basic engine is used in commercial and workboat roles worldwide — a good sign of the margin built into the design. All three of our ratings share the same block, so the choice between them is about matching power to the hull rather than choosing different hardware.
The D11 range
All three D11 models share the same 10.8-litre block, injection system and electronics — the difference is rated power, so choosing between them is a matching exercise rather than a hardware decision. The D11-625 generally suits heavier hulls and owners who cruise at relaxed revs; the D11-725 is the pick where outright performance matters in a lighter or faster planing hull; and the D11-670 covers the ground in between. For a repower, the sensible starting point is matching or modestly exceeding the outgoing engines' power while checking gearbox ratio, shaft and propeller specification. We run those calculations against your boat's displacement, hull type and target cruise speed, then confirm the result with propping checks at the sea-trial stage.
Drive options
Straight shaft inboard
All three ratings — D11-625, D11-670 and D11-725 — are supplied as conventional inboards driving a shaft through a marine reverse gear. This is the standard fit for repowers of existing shaft-drive boats and for game boats and commercial hulls where shaft simplicity is preferred.
Volvo Penta IPS
The same 10.8-litre D11 also powers Volvo Penta's IPS pod packages — IPS800, built on the 625 hp rating, and IPS950 on the 725 hp rating — with forward-facing counter-rotating propellers and joystick docking. IPS suits new builds and hulls engineered for pods; it is not a conversion path for an existing shaft boat.

Why buy your D11 from Mariner
Big-displacement torque, inline-six smoothness
With 10.8 litres, electronically controlled direct injection and a twin-entry turbo, the D11 makes its power low in the rev range — ideal for pushing heavier hulls onto the plane and holding cruise economically, with the refinement expected in a modern motor yacht.
Authorised-dealer repowers, end to end
As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer, Mariner Engineering handles the whole D11 project from our Spotswood workshop: engine supply, changeover engineering, installation and sea-trial commissioning on Port Phillip Bay.
Factory-trained servicing and genuine parts
After delivery, the same factory-trained team services your D11 to Volvo Penta schedules with genuine parts and factory diagnostic tooling for the engine management system — one workshop across the life of the engine.
Volvo Penta D11 — your questions answered
Which D11 model do I need — 625, 670 or 725 hp?
It depends on your boat's displacement, hull form and the cruise speed you actually want, not just the biggest number. All three share the same block, so we size the rating to the load: heavier or semi-displacement hulls often do their best work on the D11-625, while lighter planing hulls chasing speed justify the D11-725. We run the numbers for your boat before quoting and verify performance on sea trial.
Can I repower my existing shaft-drive boat with D11s?
Often, yes — the D11 is a common repower choice for boats already running engines in this power class. The practical checks are engine-room dimensions and access, engine beds and mounts, gearbox ratio and shaft alignment, and cooling and exhaust routing. We inspect the boat first, then quote a complete changeover including installation and sea-trial commissioning rather than a bare engine swap.
Should I choose shaft drive or IPS?
If you're repowering an existing shaft boat, shaft is the answer — IPS requires a hull structurally designed for pods and isn't a retrofit for a conventional boat. On a new build or an existing IPS boat, the D11 is offered as the IPS800 and IPS950 packages, which bring joystick docking and efficiency gains over a comparable shaft installation. We're happy to talk through both paths for your situation.
Can you service a D11 in Melbourne?
Yes. As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer we service D11s at Spotswood and on Port Phillip Bay with factory-trained technicians, genuine Volvo Penta parts and the factory diagnostic tools for the D11's engine management system. That covers scheduled servicing, fault diagnosis and warranty support — call (03) 9399 5888 to book.
