The Volvo Penta D6 is a 5.5-litre, six-cylinder marine diesel with common rail direct injection, turbocharging and aftercooling — with some variants and drive packages adding a supercharger for sharper low-rev response. Our range runs from the D6-300 through to the D6-480, and the whole family is tuned for what Volvo Penta calls marine torque: strong pull low in the rev range to lift a planing hull out of the hole and hold a comfortable cruise without labouring.
The current generation, introduced in 2019, was a near-complete re-engineering of the platform rather than a facelift: higher-pressure fuel injection, updated engine management, extended service intervals and full integration with Volvo Penta's Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) — which brings glass-cockpit displays, autopilot integration, and joystick docking and dynamic positioning on suitable drivelines.
The D6 range
Choose a D6 rating on hull weight, target cruise speed and drive type — not the headline number. The D6-300 and D6-340 suit heavier semi-displacement hulls, workboats and owners prioritising duty rating and economy; the D6-380 and D6-440 are the sweet spot for planing cruisers and sportfishers chasing a brisk, relaxed cruise; and the D6-480 is the flagship for maximum performance. Bear in mind that not every rating pairs with every drive: the DPI sterndrive tops out at the D6-440, the D6-400 is a sterndrive-only rating, and the D6-480 is offered with shaft and IPS but not the sterndrive. For repowers, matching your existing shaft line, gearbox and hull design speed matters more than maximum horsepower — we run the propulsion calculations, recommend a specific rating and propeller, and prove it at sea trial.

Inboard shaft
The classic configuration, offered with every rating in our range except the sterndrive-specific D6-400 — from the D6-300 up to the flagship D6-480. The natural route for repowering older shaft-drive cruisers, sportfishers and commercial hulls; waterjet versions of the top ratings are also produced for suitable applications.
Aquamatic DPI sterndrive
Volvo Penta's Duoprop sterndrive with a hydraulic clutch for smooth, quiet shifting and steer-by-wire as standard — enabling joystick docking and dynamic positioning. Offered on D6 ratings up to the D6-440; the D6-400 in our range is a sterndrive-specific rating.
IPS pod drives
Forward-facing, counter-rotating pods supplied as complete, matched D6-IPS packages — badged by equivalent inboard performance rather than engine horsepower (the 480 hp D6 powers the IPS650, for example). Excellent efficiency and joystick manoeuvring, best suited to hulls designed around pods rather than retrofits.

Why buy your D6 from Mariner
Torque-rich 5.5-litre inline-six
Common rail direct injection with turbocharging and aftercooling — plus a supercharger on some variants and drive packages — gives the D6 strong low-rpm torque and refined, quiet running. It gets heavy planing hulls onto the plane without drama and holds cruise revs comfortably.
Re-engineered current generation
The 2019-onwards platform brought higher injection pressures, updated engine management and longer service intervals, with full EVC integration: digital displays, autopilot connectivity, and joystick docking and dynamic positioning on DPI and IPS drivelines.
Dealer support from quote to sea trial
As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer, Mariner Engineering sizes the right D6 rating and drive for your hull, handles the complete repower — engine beds, driveline, exhaust and EVC — and commissions the installation with a sea trial on Port Phillip Bay, backed by factory-trained servicing and genuine parts.
Volvo Penta D6 — your questions answered
Which D6 model do I actually need?
It depends on your hull type, loaded displacement and the cruise speed you actually run at — more horsepower is not automatically better, and over-powering a hull adds cost without a matching gain in speed. As an authorised dealer we run Volvo Penta's propulsion calculations for your specific boat and quote a rating, gearbox ratio and propeller to suit, then verify performance at the commissioning sea trial.
Can a D6 replace my older Volvo Penta TAMD or KAD engine?
Very often, yes — the D6 inboard is the natural successor to TAMD63/TAMD74-era shaft engines, and repowering is a large part of what we do. The footprint, mounts, exhaust and electronics all differ from the older engines, so every job starts with a survey of your engine room and driveline. Sterndrive conversions need extra care, as the current DPI leg is not a drop-in replacement for older DP transom drives. We quote the complete changeover, including installation and sea trial, not just the engine.
Shaft, DPI sterndrive or IPS — which drive should I choose?
Shaft drive is the simplest and most robust option, and usually the right answer for repowers and commercial or heavier hulls. The Aquamatic DPI sterndrive suits planing hulls built for a transom drive, with trim control, joystick docking and strong performance up to the D6-440. IPS offers the best efficiency and manoeuvring of the three, but it is generally a proposition for boats designed around pods rather than a retrofit. If you are unsure, we will recommend against a configuration that does not suit your hull.
Who services the D6 in Melbourne, and what does servicing involve?
We do — Mariner Engineering is an authorised Volvo Penta dealer with factory-trained technicians, genuine parts and Volvo Penta diagnostic tools at our Spotswood workshop, servicing vessels across Port Phillip Bay. The current-generation D6 was designed for extended service intervals, and keeping to the factory schedule with an authorised dealer protects both reliability and your warranty position.
