The Volvo Penta D8 is an in-line six-cylinder, 7.7-litre marine diesel with common-rail direct injection, double overhead camshafts and compound charging — a twin-entry turbocharger working with a supercharger that fills in boost low in the rev range for sharp acceleration and responsive close-quarters handling. Built on a proven Volvo Group eight-litre engine platform and introduced to the marine market in 2016, it is engineered for a high power-to-weight ratio, low noise and vibration, and strong torque from low rpm for rapid acceleration onto the plane.

In the Volvo Penta range the D8 sits above the D6 (which tops out at 480 hp) and below the larger D11 and D13, making it the step up for boats that need genuinely big power without big-block bulk: large flybridge cruisers and motor yachts, sportsfishing and game boats, and fast commercial vessels such as patrol, charter and passenger craft. Our catalogue covers the two shaft-drive leisure ratings — the D8-550 at 550 hp and the D8-600 at 600 hp — most commonly installed as twins in planing hulls.

    The D8 range

The D8-550 and D8-600 share the same 7.7-litre six-cylinder block, supercharged and turbocharged induction and common-rail injection, so the choice comes down to how much load your hull puts on the engines and the cruise speed you're chasing. The D8-550 covers most twin installations in large planing cruisers with power to spare, while the D8-600 — the flagship rating — suits heavier boats, owners chasing higher cruise and top-end speed, or anyone who wants performance headroom so the engines run relaxed at cruise. The right answer depends on hull weight, gear ratio and propping, so we run the propulsion numbers for your specific boat before recommending a rating. If your power target sits below this family, the D6 range (up to 480 hp) may be the better fit.

    Drive options

    Straight shaft inboard

Both catalogue models — D8-550 and D8-600 — are shaft-drive inboards paired with a marine reverse gear: the classic, robust setup for larger cruisers, game boats and commercial hulls, and the natural fit for most repowers.

    Volvo Penta IPS

The same 7.7-litre platform powers Volvo Penta's D8 IPS pod packages (D8-IPS700 and D8-IPS800 in leisure trim) with forward-facing counter-rotating propellers and joystick docking. IPS is specified as a complete package per project — talk to us if your boat is IPS-based.

    Waterjet

Volvo Penta offers the D8 for waterjet applications, a common pairing on fast patrol, rescue and passenger craft where shallow draft and high-speed handling matter.

Why buy your D8 from Mariner

    Big-boat power, compact package

550–600 hp from a 7.7-litre inline-six with a twin-entry turbo, supercharger and common-rail injection. High torque from low rpm means fast time-to-plane and confident manoeuvring in heavier hulls, with the low noise and vibration Volvo Penta's common-rail diesels are known for.

    Proven Volvo Group platform

The D8 is built on a Volvo Group eight-litre engine architecture used well beyond the marine world, and the same family carries commercial and heavy-duty ratings for patrol, ferry and workboat duty — durability credentials that matter when you're fitting one engine (or two) for the long haul.

    Authorised dealer repowers & support

Mariner Engineering surveys your engine room, handles the changeover, sets up EVC electronics and commissions with a sea trial on Port Phillip Bay. Factory-trained technicians and genuine Volvo Penta parts keep your warranty and your engine in top shape.

Volvo Penta D8 — your questions answered

Do I need the D8-550 or the D8-600?

They're the same base engine at different ratings, so it hinges on your hull weight, target cruise speed and how much headroom you want. The D8-550 is ample for many twin-engine cruisers; the D8-600 suits heavier hulls or owners chasing higher cruise with engines running relaxed. We calculate the propulsion requirements for your specific boat — including gearbox ratio and propping — before quoting, so you're not paying for power you can't use or under-powering the hull.

Will a D8 fit my boat as a repower?

Often yes, particularly on boats built for large-displacement diesels — but it depends on engine room dimensions, engine weight (roughly 840 kg dry per engine, bobtail, on Volvo Penta's published figures), shaft line geometry, cooling, exhaust and fuel delivery. We inspect the vessel first, confirm fit and gearbox matching, and quote the full changeover including installation, EVC setup and sea-trial commissioning.

Can I get the D8 with a sterndrive or saildrive?

No — the D8 pairs with straight shaft, Volvo Penta IPS pods or waterjet only. Volvo Penta's Aquamatic sterndrive packages are built around the smaller D4/D6 diesels and petrol engines, and saildrives belong to the small D1/D2 auxiliary range. If your boat is sterndrive-powered, a D4 or D6 package is the path we'd look at instead.
