The V6 Petrol Series is Volvo Penta's modern 4.3-litre petrol sterndrive engine, offered in our range at 200, 250 and 280 hp. Part of the new-generation petrol platform Volvo Penta rolled out from the mid-2010s alongside its V8 stablemates, it uses an all-aluminium block, electronic fuel injection, variable valve timing and freshwater (closed-circuit) cooling, with catalysed versions available to meet current emissions standards. The result is a package that is noticeably lighter, quieter and more fuel-efficient than the older-generation 4.3-litre engines it replaced.
In character it is a classic family-boat engine: quick onto the plane, relaxed at cruise and easy to live with. It suits bowriders, deck boats, cuddy cabins and wake or water-sports boats — typically sterndrive hulls in the roughly 18–26 ft bracket — and it is the natural successor for boats running an earlier Volvo Penta 4.3 GXi/GL or another ageing 4.3-litre petrol package, which makes it one of the most common petrol repower requests we see.
The V6 Petrol Series range
All three models share the same 4.3-litre V6 architecture, so choosing between them comes down to hull weight, the boat builder's maximum rated power and how you use the boat. The V6-200 suits lighter hulls and relaxed cruising where outright pace matters less; the V6-250 is the all-rounder for mid-size bowriders and deck boats that regularly carry a full crew and gear; and the V6-280 tops the family for heavier hulls, water sports and owners who want a faster cruise with power in reserve — often the smart pick on a repower, provided it stays within the hull's rating. Never exceed the builder's maximum rated power; if you're unsure, we can size the right model and drive against your boat's specifications and confirm performance on the sea trial.
Drive options
Aquamatic SX
Single-propeller sterndrive — the simple, cost-effective pairing for lighter hulls and general family boating, well matched to the V6-200 and V6-250.
Aquamatic DPS Duoprop
Twin counter-rotating propellers for stronger grip, faster holeshot and more precise handling, especially on heavier or higher-powered boats. Volvo Penta's sterndrive joystick docking is offered on factory twin-DPS installations.
Forward Drive (FWD)
Forward-facing twin counter-rotating props tucked under the hull, moving the propellers well away from the swim platform — Volvo Penta's drive for wakesurfing and wake-sports boats, offered with selected higher-output V6 packages.

Why buy your V6 Petrol Series from Mariner
Light, modern V6 power
All-aluminium 4.3-litre construction with electronic fuel injection and variable valve timing gives an excellent power-to-weight ratio, with quieter running and better fuel economy than the previous-generation 4.3-litre petrol engines.
A straightforward petrol repower
The V6 is the natural changeover for older Volvo Penta 4.3 GXi/GL and similar petrol sterndrive packages. Mariner Engineering quotes the complete job — removal, engine and drive installation, rigging and sea-trial commissioning — from our Spotswood workshop.

As an authorised Volvo Penta dealer we supply genuine parts and provide factory-trained servicing and warranty support, so your V6 is looked after locally for the life of the boat. Call (03) 9399 5888.
Volvo Penta V6 Petrol Series — your questions answered
Which V6 model does my boat need?
Start with the boat builder's maximum rated power — you should never exceed it. Within that limit, heavier hulls, water sports and boats that run loaded favour the V6-280, mid-size family bowriders are typically well served by the V6-250, and lighter hulls or relaxed cruisers can do nicely on the V6-200. Bring us your boat's details and how you use it, and we'll recommend a model and propping, then confirm it on the commissioning sea trial.
Can I repower my old 4.3 GXi or other 4.3-litre sterndrive with a new V6?
In most cases, yes — the V6 is the current successor to the older 4.3-litre petrol packages and this is one of the most common repowers we do. The new engine pairs with current Aquamatic SX or DPS drives, so depending on the age and condition of your existing transom assembly and drive, the job may include a matching new drive. We inspect the boat first and quote the complete changeover, including installation and sea-trial commissioning.
SX, Duoprop or Forward Drive — which drive should I choose?
The single-prop SX is the simplest and most economical option and suits most family boats at V6 power levels. The DPS Duoprop's counter-rotating props give better grip, quicker acceleration and more sure-footed handling — worth it on heavier hulls or at higher power. (Joystick docking is only offered on factory twin-DPS installations, so it isn't an option on a typical single-engine boat.) Forward Drive is the specialist choice for wakesurfing and wake-sports boats, with forward-facing props kept well away from the swim platform. We'll match the drive to your hull and usage as part of the quote.
Can you service a Volvo Penta V6 under warranty in Melbourne?
Yes. Mariner Engineering is an authorised Volvo Penta dealer, so engines we supply are backed by Volvo Penta's factory warranty, and our factory-trained technicians carry out logbook servicing and warranty work with genuine parts at our Spotswood workshop, close to Port Phillip Bay ramps and marinas.
