The Volvo Penta D2 is a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder marine diesel built around a robust indirect-injection design with a cam-driven in-line injection pump and closed-circuit freshwater cooling as standard. Spanning 50 to 75 hp across the D2-50, D2-60 and D2-75, it sits above the smaller D1 range as Volvo Penta's core engine for sailing yachts and small displacement craft, and is among the most widely fitted auxiliary diesels in the modern cruising fleet.
The three models share the same block but differ in aspiration: the D2-50 is naturally aspirated, while the D2-60 and D2-75 add a turbocharger — the D2-75 with charge-air cooling — to lift output without growing the engine's footprint. All three are tuned for strong torque at low revs, which means relaxed, quiet cruising rpm, confident progress into a chop or headwind, and responsive handling around the marina. MDI engine management, a 115 A alternator with charging sensor and compatibility with Volvo Penta instrumentation complete a package designed to live quietly under a companionway.
The D2 range
Choosing between the three usually comes down to displacement and how you use the boat. The naturally aspirated D2-50 is the simplest of the family and suits moderate-displacement cruising yachts that motor at sensible speeds. The turbocharged D2-60 adds useful reserve for heavier boats, adverse tides and Port Phillip Bay's short chop without changing the engine's footprint, while the charge-air-cooled D2-75 is the pick for larger, heavier yachts and motorsailers that need to hold hull speed fully loaded. Because the right choice depends on displacement, waterline length, propeller and drive type rather than headline horsepower alone, we size the engine from your vessel's details and confirm performance at the commissioning sea trial.
Drive options
130S saildrive
The factory-matched saildrive package for the D2-50, with three-point suspended mounting for low noise and vibration and no shaft alignment required.
150S saildrive
The larger saildrive paired with the turbocharged D2-60 and D2-75, rated for the extra output at the top of the family.
Shaft drive (inboard)
All three models are available for conventional shaft installations with Volvo Penta's matched gearboxes — straight or 8-degree down-angle output, mechanical shift as standard and a hydraulic option on the turbocharged models.

Why buy your D2 from Mariner
Built for life under sail
High torque at low rpm, closed-circuit freshwater cooling as standard and adjustable cushion-type rubber mounts give the D2 quiet, low-vibration cruising at relaxed revs — with the grunt in reserve to punch tide and headwind when the sails come down.
The repower benchmark
Compact, mechanically straightforward and offered in both saildrive and shaft form, the D2 is the go-to replacement for older Volvo Penta auxiliaries — often reusing the existing drive arrangement with minimal rework.
Authorised dealer support in Melbourne
Mariner Engineering supplies new D2 engines with genuine parts backup, factory-trained servicing and full repower project management — from engineering survey to sea-trial commissioning on Port Phillip Bay.
Volvo Penta D2 — your questions answered
Which D2 model does my yacht need?
As a rough guide, the D2-50 suits moderate-displacement yachts in the mid-30-to-low-40-foot range, the D2-60 heavier boats of similar size, and the D2-75 larger or heavier yachts and motorsailers. But displacement, waterline length, propeller and drive type matter more than length alone, so send us your vessel's details and we'll size the engine properly — and verify it on the sea trial.
Can a D2 replace my old Volvo Penta MD engine or D2-55?
In most cases, yes — the D2 is the most common repower path for ageing Volvo Penta auxiliaries, and yachts already fitted with a Volvo Penta saildrive are often well placed for a straightforward changeover. Every boat is different, though, so we inspect the engine beds, drive, exhaust and controls before quoting, and include any adaptation work in the price.
Should I choose the saildrive or shaft version?
Usually your existing installation decides: converting between saildrive and shaft is major structural work, so nearly all repowers keep the current arrangement. The D2-50 pairs with the 130S saildrive and the D2-60 and D2-75 with the larger 150S, while all three are available as shaft-drive inboards with straight or down-angle gearboxes. We'll confirm the right drive configuration when we survey the boat.
Who services the D2 in Melbourne, and are parts available?
We do — Mariner Engineering is an authorised Volvo Penta dealer with factory-trained technicians at Spotswood, genuine parts supply, and full saildrive servicing including seals and anodes. New D2 engines we install are commissioned to Volvo Penta's requirements and supported under the factory warranty.
